Pot Odds in Poker: The Formula and How to Use It

Pot odds tell you the minimum win percentage a call needs to break even. The formula is one division: your call ÷ (total pot after your call). If it costs $20 to win a pot that will contain $100, you need to win 20% of the time — no more, no less — for that call to be neutral EV.

This is the most useful calculation in poker, and it takes about three seconds once it’s habit.

The formula, worked

Required equity = call ÷ (pot + call)

“Pot” means the pot including your opponent’s bet, before your call.

Notice the last line: an overbet of twice the pot demands you win two-thirds of the time. Bet sizing is the price your opponent is charging you, and good players choose it deliberately.

Because bet sizes cluster, you can memorize the answers instead of dividing:

Six numbers cover most of the decisions you will ever face. A pot-sized bet needs 33%, a half-pot bet needs 25% — knowing just those two makes you sharper than most of the table.

Step two: your actual equity from outs

Required equity is only half the test. You compare it against your real chance of winning, which comes from counting outs — unseen cards that make your hand best.

The rule of 4 and 2

You will not compute hypergeometric probabilities at the table. Use this:

On the flop with two cards to come: outs × 4. On the turn with one card to come: outs × 2.

Nine outs on the flop: 9 × 4 = 36%, against a true 35.0%. Eight outs on the turn: 8 × 2 = 16%, against a true 17.4%. Accurate enough for every real decision. Above about 12 outs the ×4 version overshoots — subtract a couple of points and you’re back inside rounding error. The trap: the ×4 version assumes you will actually see both remaining cards. That’s only guaranteed when the flop bet puts someone all-in. If your opponent will bet again on the turn, price the flop call with ×2, not ×4, and re-evaluate on the next street.

Putting the two halves together

Flop is 9♠6♠2♦, you hold A♠K♠. Pot is $60, opponent bets $30.

  • Price: call $30 into a $90 pot → 30 ÷ 120 = 25% needed.
  • Equity: nine flush outs, one card to come → 9 × 2 = 18%, plus roughly six more outs to a top pair that may or may not be good.

On pure flush equity the call is a small loser. Add live overcards and it’s marginally profitable. That kind of borderline answer is exactly why the next two concepts exist.

Implied odds: the money you win later

Implied odds are the chips you expect to extract on future streets when you hit. They make calls profitable that direct pot odds reject.

Concrete case. Blinds $2/$5, a player opens to $20, you hold 5♦5♣ with $500 behind. The pot is $47 and it costs $20 — direct odds demand 20 ÷ 67 = 29.9% equity, and a pocket pair flops a set only 11.8% of the time. On price alone this is a clear fold.

Now do the real math. You lose $20 in 88.2% of cases. To break even you need to average enough on the 11.8% you hit:

0.118 × X ≥ 0.882 × $20 → X ≈ $149

You need to win about $149 — roughly 7.5 times your call — on the hands where you flop a set. With $500 behind against an opponent who will pay off a big bet, that’s very achievable. With $60 behind, it isn’t. This is why the set-mining rule of thumb is stack-depth dependent: call small raises with small pairs only when effective stacks are 15–20 times the call, since you won’t get paid every single time you hit.

Implied odds are highest when: stacks are deep, your draw is well disguised (sets, small straights), and your opponent has a hand they can’t fold. They are close to zero when stacks are short, the board is obvious (four to a flush), or your opponent is a good player who will shut down instantly.

Reverse implied odds: the money you lose when you hit

Reverse implied odds are the chips you expect to lose on future streets when you make your hand and it’s still second best. New players ignore this entirely, and it is expensive.

Three standard cases:

  • The weak flush draw. You hold 6♠4♠ and the flop brings two spades. When the third spade lands, you have a flush — and any opponent with a bigger spade is now betting into you for stacks. Your nine “outs” include several that cost you money rather than win it.
  • The idiot end of a straight. Board is 7♠6♣2♥ and you hold 5♦4♦. An eight gives you 8-7-6-5-4. It also gives anyone holding 9-8 a bigger straight, and 9-8 is exactly the kind of hand that plays that flop.
  • Top pair, bad kicker. K♦J♣ on a K♠7♥3♣ flop looks great until a tight opponent raises the turn. You beat every worse king they’d never bet, and lose to AK, KQ, and every set — you win small pots and lose big ones. The practical adjustment: discount your outs. A flush draw to the 6 is not nine clean outs — treat it as six or seven. A gutshot to the low end of a straight is barely a draw at all. Nut draws deserve their full count; everything below the nuts deserves a haircut.

How pot odds interact with position

Pot odds are cheaper to use in position, because you see the price before you have to name one. Out of position you must guess whether a call now leads to another bet you can’t profitably call on the next street — that uncertainty is one of the reasons position is the biggest structural edge in poker. In position, a marginal draw realizes its equity; out of position, the same draw often gets blown off the pot.

Drilling it

Three habits build this into reflex:

  1. Say the price out loud (in your head) every time you face a bet, even when folding is obvious. Repetition is what makes it fast.
  2. Count outs before you look at the price, so the number isn’t motivated reasoning.
